Discover Academic Excellence in Sapporo, Explore a unique blend of innovative education, a supportive small-campus environment, and an unparalleled quality of life in Japan’s most dynamic northern city.

A Unique Academic Focus

Our programs are designed to challenge and inspire. In our distinctive programs, students master two complementary methodologies: “Inquiry-Based Problem Solving” and “Inquiry-Based Value Exploration”. This dual approach ensures graduates are equipped not only to solve today’s problems but also to define tomorrow’s opportunities.

An Intimate and Supportive Campus

We are a small-scale public university, which we see as our greatest strength. This environment fosters a close-knit community where students enjoy direct access to faculty and meaningful collaboration. Our professors are not just lecturers; they are mentors.

The Sapporo Advantage: An Ideal Environment for Learning

Sapporo offers an experience unlike any other major Japanese city. It combines the safety, convenience, and modernity of Japan’s fifth-largest metropolis with stunning, accessible nature.

  • A Modern Metropolis: Enjoy a clean, safe city with highly developed public transport, a vibrant culture, and a refreshing, cool climate.
  • Affordable Living: Compared to other major cities like Tokyo or Osaka, Sapporo boasts a significantly lower cost of living, especially for rent.
  • Gateway to Nature: Minutes from the city center, students can enjoy world-class hiking, skiing, and other outdoor recreation—a perfect balance to rigorous academic life.

A Supported Immersion Experience

We are committed to helping your students succeed and thrive in Japan.

  • Language Support: While many of our core courses are conducted in Japanese (requiring basic proficiency), we provide dedicated university language support services to help students build confidence and fluency.
  • Housing Support: While we do not operate our own dormitories, we ensure students have a secure place to live. We assist all incoming international students in securing accommodation at the Sapporo International Student Center, a dedicated facility for the city’s global community.

Vibrant Student Life

Student activities are lively and student-led. Popular clubs include:
# A YOSAKOI Soran Festival dance team
# Tea ceremony (a traditional Japanese cultural club)
# A picture-book storytelling club
In addition to these, there are many other opportunities to make wonderful memories with friends. We encourage you to explore and find activities you enjoy!

We believe the combination of our unique academic focus, affordable cost, and Sapporo’s incredible living environment makes us an ideal partner for international collaboration. Design

Sapporo City University (SCU) is a public university located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, the northernmost cultural capital of Japan. Our School of Design goes beyond traditional arts education; we focus on practical research and social implementation to solve complex global issues. We believe SCU offers three unique values that make us an ideal partner for international collaboration:

  1. Hands-on Education in Spatial & Digital Design
Located in a rich natural environment surrounded by forests and rivers, our university offers a learning setting that deepens bodily awareness and architectural thinking grounded in human experience. Students engage in hands-on creation ranging from architectural and spatial design, supported by fabrication in wood and metal, to digital practices such as interactive media, game design, and VR/AR. By integrating architecture, spatial design, material practice, and digital technologies, we foster designers who can create meaningful experiences connecting physical space, human perception, and everyday life.
  2. Expertise in Cold-Climate & Northern Region Design
Sapporo is one of the few major cities in the world (population 1.9 million) that experiences heavy snowfall. We view this environment not as a limitation, but as a unique resource. SCU possesses specialized expertise in cold-region architecture, snow management, and winter urban planning. We offer exceptional opportunities for fieldwork and research focused on climate resilience and lifestyle design in northern regions.
  3. The City as a “Living Laboratory”
As a municipal university, SCU maintains strong networks with the local government and regional industries. Our educational and research activities extend beyond campus into the city itself. Students engage in Project-Based Learning (PBL) rooted in real-world contexts—ranging from smart city experiments using AI and IoT technologies to social design projects driven by community engagement.

We are eager to collaborate with global partners to explore how design can contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.

Nursing

The School of Nursing at Sapporo City University traces its origins to a three-year vocational nursing school established in 1965. It was reorganized and expanded into the current university in 2006, and for nearly 60 years it has played a leading role in nursing education in Hokkaido. Many of our graduates serve as leaders not only in Sapporo but also in healthcare institutions nationwide.
Our campus is located just a five-minute walk from Soen Station, one stop from Sapporo Station, offering excellent accessibility in an urban setting.
Our curriculum is designed to foster professionals who understand the value of person-centered care, demonstrate expertise in their respective nursing fields, and contribute to the community. The curriculum consists of 138 courses, including foundational, specialized, and interdisciplinary subjects that stimulate students’ intellectual curiosity and professional growth.

Distinctive Features of Our School Include:

  1. A rich clinical training environment supported by strong partnerships with medical institutions in Sapporo
  2. Simulation-based learning and OSCEs involving trained citizen volunteer simulated patients
  3. Participation in community development through project-based learning
  4. Highly accomplished faculty members in diverse nursing specialties and a small-group educational approach
  5. A seamless academic pathway from the undergraduate program to the master’s and doctoral programs

Through this curriculum, students fulfill the requirements to obtain eligibility to take Japan’s national examinations for Registered Nurse (undergraduate program), Public Health Nurse, or Midwife (advanced program).

A Unique University Combining Nursing and Design

Sapporo City University is one of the few universities in Japan that houses both a School of Nursing and a School of Design. This unique combination enables students to engage with innovative and exploratory ideas, including design thinking in healthcare, user-centered approaches, and concepts related to care environments and welfare equipment design.
Collaborative projects and courses between nursing and design students foster interdisciplinary learning and broaden students’ perspectives on people and health.
